Photo Collages

Home -> Photo Collages

It started with a simple idea: what if I threw all of the photos I’ve ever taken on the table and rearranged them to look like something?  That would be cool, but a lot of work, why not have software do it?  So I wrote some collage software  that takes a bunch of images and rearranges them – moves them, rotates them, and even color-adjusts them slightly – until they look like a target picture.

I also created a mosaic program that uses a bricking pattern. This allows for the use of images that are oriented both horizontally and vertically. It also overlaps the images here and there using the collage software’s algorithms for deciding which image is better on top where they overlap.

The software can also create visually interesting results when the target is words or shapes.  This has become my favorite application.

Some more collages and mosaics generated with this software can be seen here and here on benandalonna.com

The software is currently command-line Linux only – and a total hassle to use.  Porting to windows and putting a nice GUI on it is on my near-term todo list.  Maybe.
